The Internet - Friend or Foe?

It's big, it's difficult and time consuming to navigate for a lot of folks, it has the potential to do damage, plus its questionable content can sometimes pop up when you least expect it,  but one thing is for sure - it's here to stay.

We only have two choices when it comes to what we do with the internet.  We can ignore it or we can learn how to use it for our own good.  Since it is not going anywhere, I suggest we learn how to use its vast resources to better our lives and our jobs.

Fortunately, there are effective techniques to help make searching more productive and less time consuming. Unfortunately, surfing the internet also involves learning security and protection techniques.

Search engines provide the entrance ramps onto the information super highway.  There are several search engines available, although, the two most popular are Google and Yahoo.

There are two types of search engines on the internet.  The first is called the searchable subject index. This kind of search engine searches only the titles and descriptions of sites, and does not search individual pages.  The other type is the full-text search engine, which uses computerized "spiders" to index millions, sometimes billions of pages. These pages can be searched by title or content, allowing for much narrower searches.

The future of searching for useful information (or data mining as it is called when it involves stored data in a database) will become much simpler as search engines evolve into smart data mining tools.  This will allow industries to share information without feeling that proprietary information is at risk.

Search engines will continue to get smarter as we go forward into the world of data mining.  Having data stored on central servers will not be necessary anymore, as the best search engines will find and extract the data from data bases around the world using simple syntax, along with keywords and phrases.

Data mining will become common place for anyone needing to look for useful information stored in select data bases for whatever industry the search is prompted.  As search engines get smarter users will have access to this data.
